Notes:

This pattern is worked in rounds until the Brim Bill and then is worked in rows.
The pattern can be worked in one color or multiple colors.
The brim is stiff, if you want a looser brim, don’t double the yarn until the last two rows of the brim.

*If you exclude the chain 1 after every cluster stitch you will end up with a child-size hat.

Pattern
(multiples of 12 sts)

Start with a Magic Circle, or  (4 sc, slst into the first sc to create a Chain Stitch Center Ring).

Round 1: 12 dc into the magic circle, invisible slst to join, ch 1 (12 st)
Round 2: 2 dc into the same st and all stitches around, slst to join, ch 1  (24 st)
Round 3: 1 dc into the same st, 2 dc into the next st, repeat 11 more times around, slst to join, ch 1 (36 st)
Round 4: “1 fpdc into the same st, 1 fpdc, clst, ch 1, clst, ch 1, clst, ch 1, 1 fpdc” (repeat 5x) slst to join, ch 1(72 st)
Round 5: “1 fpdc into the same st, 1 fpdc, 1 dc in the next st, CLST into the previous ch-sp, ch1, CLST  into the previous ch1sp, dc into the last ch1 sp, 2 fpdc” (repeat 5x)   (66 st)

Round Cont:
Now repeat Round 4 & Round 5 till you reach the desired length of the slouchy, cut and tie off.

I repeated Rounds 4 & 5 about 9.5 times ending on Round 21 for the Adult Large size hat (72st) for 10” of Length. Circumference: 28”.

If you stop on Round 22 you will have 66 stitches to work the brim with and create size Adult Small at 21” Circumference: 21”.

If you stop on any “Round 4” you will have 66 stitches to work the brim with and create a size Adult Small at a 21” circumference.

If you stop on any “Round 5” you will have 72 stitches to work the brim with and create a size Adult Large at a 28” circumference.

Count your Sts.
Now continue onto the Brim.

The Brim

Round 1: sc  around ( 66, 72)

Now add a second strand of yarn to your hook, and you will now work the brim with double strands of yarn.

** Measure the hat’s diameter after the first round to see if it is to your liking, as you can add SC decreases to the first 3 rows to adjust the size. **

Round 2 – 3: sc  around ( 66, 72)  For a short Brim end here, and Cut, tie off, and count sts.
Round 4 – 5: sc  around ( 66, 72)
Cut, tie off, and count sts.

We will now be working in rows, instead of rounds.
Rotate the hat to where you want to place the brim and count out a section of 28 st. Then place a stitch marker or piece of yarn in the 1st, and 28th stitches.
If you want a smaller brim you can start with fewer stitches, the small brim in the photos was 20 st.

Slip stitch in the first stitch marker with double strands of yarn in the colors of your choice for all instructions going forward.  Do not worry about ends; we will be running an edge sc around the hat to cover them up.

Add a second yarn to your hook and continue.
Row 1 – 28 sc (20, 28) Move both stitch markers in by 1, cut and tie off.
Row 2 –  26 sc (18, 26) Move both stitch markers in by 1, cut and tie off.
Row 3 –  24 sc, Ch 1, and tighten.  (16, 24) Move both stitch markers in by 1
do not cut off, Do not turn, simply pull the yarn up through the tightened chain stitch, pull back along the length of the brim by pulling it back to the first stitch marker on the 1st ST of row 4. Pull yarn through that first stitch.

You should have 6 strands of yarn running along the brim and we will work our stitches over these strands to create a thicker brim, working over 6 strands will cause a might tighter stitch.

Pull your yarn back to start stitching row 4 and use this technique for row 5 as well. Alternatively, you can keep cutting and tying off all rows. Do not worry about ends; we will be running an edge sc around the hat to cover them up.

Row 4  –  22 sc (14, 22) Move both stitch markers in by 1 and pull the yarn up to Row 5.
**For a short Brim end here and skip to Round 6.**
Row 5  –  20 sc ( 20) cut and tie off.

Change to the 6.5mm hook. Slst into any st on the brim with double yarn of the colors of your choice.
Round 6:  SC around the complete hat working over all the ends. Cut, Tie off, and sew ends in.

Please be sure to secure your ends first before working over them and that is the pattern!
